Washington listed as a "liability sinner.
Washington ranks 37th among the states, putting it in the “sinner” category. The report classifies a sinner state as one that has “relatively high monetary tort losses and/or high litigation risks and relatively weak tort rules on the books.”

The study, offered as a resource for elected officials and businesses, makes the point that a state’s economic performance is directly tied to the health of its tort system. Pacific Research Institute estimates that lawsuit abuse costs the U.S. economy $589 billion a year.

Transition - Change is Coming

by Kurt Gahnberg,
President

The annual rite of passage where ACEC transitions, from one Board of Direction and President to the next, is fast-approaching.  I have to say that it really feels like it is too soon.  Many of the changes we have initiated have just begun to get traction and bear fruit…and now it is time to move on.  While I know we have accomplished a great deal, I also know there is much left to do.

With the changes we have worked so hard to initiate during this past year, we have been working to make this pending transition seamless.  Our focus all year has been around key strategies of engagement and improved communication, and being data driven as we develop our strategies.  A successful transition will be defined by a changing of our leaders, while sustaining momentum on these strategic initiatives, and deepening our commitment to continuous improvement.  With the level of Board engagement in our efforts this past year, I am confident that each continuing Board member carries the changes we have been making as a personal priority for the coming year.

Looking ahead, we are in good hands.  Our President Elect, Tom Skillings has been actively engaged in every aspect of our work this year.  This has included not only all of the initiatives we have   continued...

Last Chance to take ACEC's  2008 Professional Liability Survey!

Every year ACEC's Risk Management Committee conducts a survey of member firms regarding their professional liability insurance, claims experience, and the impact of the potential threat of litigation.  This information is crucial to determining the professional liability insurance landscape which ACEC member firms must face, and it also provides important data for ACEC's tort reform efforts in Congress.  The 2008 Professional Liability Insurance Survey of Member Firms for FY 2007 will be conducted from now through Friday, May 23, 2008.

It is critical that we receive only one response from each member firm.  Therefore, we ask that only the key principal, risk manager, or another member of the firm designated by the key principal fill out this survey.

In order to preserve the confidential nature of this survey, the form does not request your firm's name or other contact information.

To encourage participation, member firms that respond to this survey will receive a free copy of the complete results on request.  To receive your firm's copy, please send a request by separate email with the subject line 2008 PLI Survey Results to Charles Kim at ckim@acec.org.  For convenience, you can cut and paste the following text:

This is to confirm that my firm has completed and submitted the 2008 ACEC Professional Liability Insurance Survey of Member Firms for FY 2007.  Please send our free copy of the survey results to my email address.

When the survey results are completed, a free copy will be sent to the email address you provide.  The complete results will also be available for purchase through the ACEC website.

Surprise! MKA Wins

In an evening filled with suspense, eight national finalists waited for MC Ross Shafer to ask, "May I have the envelope, please,"  as ACEC kept secret the recipient of the Grand Conceptor Award for the first time.

Drew Ganges accepts the Grand Conceptor

It came down to two projects, and the excitement was palpable when Ross announced "The Olympic Sculpture Park, submitted by Magnusson Klemencic Associates." It was MKA's third Grand Conceptor Award in the past 15 years, a record unmatched by any firm.  Kudos to the folks at MKA!

And kudos too, to the Parsons/HNTB Joint Venture for the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, also a finalist and a Grand Award winner. It is remarkable that two of the eight finalists were from ACEC Washington, proving once again that we are a hot bed of engineering talent here in the Pacific Northwest.
